McAfee Coliseum Information
McAfee Coliseum, a 120 acre facility, was constructed in 1966 at a cost of $25.5 million. Groundbreaking took place in April 1964 and the newly designed stadium, under the architectural guidance of Skidmore, Owings and Merrill, began construction. This multi-purpose sports complex features a 165,000 sq. ft. playing field. is home to the Oakland Athletics and the Oakland's NFL franchise. In 1995, the coliseum began undergoing a 1-year renovation project that called for the removal of outfield bleachers, which were replaced by 22,000 seats, two 40,000 sq. ft. clubs, 125 luxury suites, a 9,000 sq. ft. kitchen, two-matrix scoreboard and two new color video boards. In October 1981, "The Wave" surfaced at McAfee Coliseum in it's first baseball appearance.
With a current seating capacity of over 50,000 fans, McAfee Coliseum has allowed many fans to see some of the biggest names in baseball. Jim 'Catfish' Hunter pitched the first perfect game at the Coliseum, Reggie Jackson and Rollie Fingers played as teammates in the 70's and Lou Brock's stolen base record was broken, in 1991, by Rickey Henderson. McAfee Coliseum also became home to Mark McGwire, Jose Canseco and Walt Weiss. It was this trio that lead to three consecutive American League titles, which began in 1988 and a World Series title in 1989.
Among the amenities at McAfee Coliseum, The Stomper Fun Zone can be found on the Club Concourse, which is behind Section 220. This facility is open until the 9th inning of each game. Children can enjoy this interactive entertainment during each home game. Stomper, the Oakland A's mascot, visit's the Fun Zone during the 7th inning on weekend games for photo sessions and autographs with the children.
Autograph opportunities are available at many games. Guests are welcome to request autographs from the players and/or coaches from the time that the gates open until 45 minutes prior to game time. Autograph seekers can gather at either dugout; however, please consider the comfort of guests who have seating in this area as to not inconvenience them during autograph sessions.
